Who We Are: Tribute
Tribute
Doretha Holmes Payne, who was affectionately known as Reese to family, was born March 10, 1934 to the late Howard & Ceola Holmes. She was united in marriage to the late Lester Payne in 1954; a union that was blessed with one son, Nathaniel. As God would permit, she made a peaceful transition on Friday, June 13, 2008 leaving a strong legacy of love and faith.
Our family was blessed with the wonderful gift of your loving presence for many years, but those years were not enough. You remain a warrior and champion in the spirit. You opened our home and your heart to so many and was never slow or short in providing prayer, words of wisdom, direction and other resources when necessary.
As your son, I must acknowledge that the most significant life and love lessons I’ve learned occurred at your feet. I am eternally grateful for the model of humanity that you provided and your endless faith in my desires, dreams and ministry. You were not only an anchor in my life but for so many others whose dreams you also helped manifest into reality. The legacy of distinguished compassionate service at Martin Luther King Memorial Chapel began with you and will be continued for generations to come.
